The Annex Recreation Center
This project is designed to integrate seamlessly with its surrounding environment while prioritizing accessibility and community connection. Guided by passive strategies such as solar orientation and prevailing southwest winds, the program is largely placed below grade to ensure universal access without reliance on stairs. A central axis connecting Broadway Street to California Avenue organizes circulation, while a 1:12 sloped walkway provides accessible access to the Olympic-sized pool. Cooling gardens and landscaped areas throughout the site support natural ventilation, shading, and user comfort.
